Greenhouse gas emissions up in B.C.
Last updated Jun 5 2006 08:39 AM PDT
CBC News

The latest report from Environment Canada shows greenhouse gas emissions in B.C. have increased by nearly 30 per cent since 1990 — the base year in the Kyoto agreement on climate change.

Eighty-three per cent of those emissions come from the oil and gas industry and the use of cars, trucks and outboard motors in the province.

The B.C. emissions numbers are contained in a report issued last month by Environment Canada to the United Nations convention on climate change.

Matt Price of the Conservation Voters of B.C. said the report shows the province is "heading in entirely the wrong direction in terms of our Kyoto commitments."

The Campbell government unveiled its own climate change plan a year and a half ago. It includes measures to encourage clean energy and alternative fuels.

The government also cites the fact that B.C. has the third lowest level of greenhouse gas emissions per capita in Canada.

But Price questions the government's commitment, given its support for major highway and energy projects that will increase emissions.

Price added that the increase in B.C.'s emissions isn't likely to be found on any government news release.

"Not only has Canada at the national level begun to abdicate its Kyoto commitments, but B.C. is also leading the way in breaking our international commitments."

Shame never got anyone anywhere. Well thats not true, the church has done greate busness with this pointing the finger from high places and making lofty pronouncement of superiority, so we can all feel "shamed". Then again I do think, although not for certain, that this has caused some fairly serious nurocies over the millenium. Id rather just moe my own yard and set an example, piouceness leads to nurocies also, you start taking your self way to seriously.

I don't know about that eli. I think our provincial government has a lot of reasons to be ashamed. And the collective "we" deserve some of that shame as well for giving the power over our province to these individuals. Alas, you say your aren't political so this is probably boring you. Creating awareness will hopefully create action to create (positive) change. Quietly minding our own business or "moe[ing your] own yard" is akin to burying your head in the sand no?

all Im saying is, no one will respond posatively from a place of shame. the whole concept of it is to keep someone beneath you. it just pushes the argument deeper and makes everyone defensive. no one wants to comunicate with a finger wagger. think of someone from your past, say a teacher who shamed you or tried to make you feel shame. in order for real change, all sides have to look each other in the eye and realized that we all have comon ground to stand on, and every indavidual regardless of political oppion, social standing, religous beliefe, sex, race, greed, color ect. deserves comon respect, no matter what the political hystaria of the day might be. no one, no human deserves to stand on the spot of shame, it has caused far too much confution and pain. beat a dog and all you get are teeth marks.

PS moweing "our" own yards, rather than telling our nabours how to mowe theirs will get far more positive change than any soap box we can stand on.

You haven't convinced me. These politicians we have working for us in most cases are really just out for themselves and what's good for them financially, hiding behind the word the "economy". We are paying these guys out of our own pockets. Are we going to just sit back and let them take advantage of that? Shame is just one word - there are many, many others that may be more well suited to these people.

If "shame" motivates people to change then that's fine, but I agree we should respond simply because it needs to be done rather than because we feel bad about it.

The environment has suffered under NDP, Liberal and Social Credit governments, so laying the blame at the feet of the government d'jour is not helpful either. No matter who is in power, the pressure needs to be maintained so that they know they will be held accountable come ballot time.

The only shame in my view lies at the feet of those many who do not vote. Not voting lets politicians off the hook and that's when things go terribly wrong as the accountability goes askew.

Well my political veiws here are far different, I dont believe that it makes the slightest difference whos in office. I dont believe that the talking heads we see on tv, or vote for, have any say in anything. re. see "the corporation" or be entertained and watch an old british sitcom called "yes priminister", but then again Im not clairvoyant.

Your views are not different than mine - I do not believe that any are much better than any others. However, I do believe in the power of the vote and of holding those in power accountable.
                  • This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

If you realy think about it, look back and ask your self if one political force, party, etc. ever REALY did anything any different than the last. Maybe wellfair reform (which hasnt changed one bit since 1980 I might add, no matter who was in office) socail housing, funding for education, stuff like that . Little stuff that placates us into thinking thay are actually doing something, and or have the power to do something. The real power is held by large multinational corporations who dont answer to anyone, and have the clout and money to dictate to entire nations, what is what and how its going to be. this is a fact, it is not hidden anywere, its public record. We've all just stopped reading, and have become so brain washed by mass media that we get pissed off about the latest political hysteria and attach our anger to the dogma that best suits us at that time. I believe that if anyone is going to make political pronouncement from an attitude of superiority, ie. pointing a finger and attaching "shame", it is best to know all sides(educate yourself) of the issue. for more info on this the best source is noam chompsky. pretty dry reading but its all in there. I realy appreciate your respounces to this, this is how real change happens, in my opinion, when we discuss ideas, thoughts, and feelings. anger beggets anger, dialog gets understanding of the issues empathy and compation for all. I feel there is just to much anger and "shame" making in the world, and if you look around its not getting anyone anywhere but dead. Thank you please respond some more.

One, Im not trying to convince anyone of anything, I merely made a comment on a topic. But now you sound angery and a little paraniond. the only possible way you can know if any politcian is out for them selves, is to be in their heads, are you clairvoyant? When you point a finger at someone there are three pointing back at you. Nothing comes from anger but more anger. If you shove, they will only shove back. Do you realy want change, or just a fight?
